Welcome to English!

Over the course of their time here, students study a wide range of literature and consolidate those skills that are so essential to 21st Century life.  We firmly believe that all students should have an enjoyable experience in their English lessons while being committed to the development of the skills required of the English curriculum.

The English team enjoy positive relationships with students as one of the Academy’s key messages is that ‘people make a difference’ whilst at the same time maintaining high expectations in order to ‘aspire to excellence’.

At Key Stage 3, students have the opportunity to express themselves in different ways – through writing, speech and more innovative ways such as animation or video.  Active reading strategies are taught and students are encouraged to read widely and independently through the use of the Academy wide programme, Accelerated Reader.  In class, students cover various pieces of literature, including a range of poetry and a Shakespeare play.

At Key Stage 4, we study both WJEC English Language and Literature as well as the iGCSE.  This covers a wide range of poetry, different cultures' texts, Shakespeare, narrative and descriptive writing, writing to inform and response to non-fiction texts.

Learning beyond the curriculum is an area that is important to us as an Academy and in the English department we offer the opportunities to enter the Rotary Club Youth Speaks competition, the Rotary Club Young Writers competition as well as many other creative writing competitions throughout the year.  We are also launching a Spelling Bee style competition this year.
