Welcome to English

We want all our students to enjoy their lessons, reading for pleasure and discovering literature they love, whilst becoming excellent communicators, confident speakers and thoughtful writers.

Students are encouraged to express themselves in different ways, being creative and developing as Independent learners.  As William Butler Yeats Said, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.  Or in the words of Tupac Shakur, "I'm not sayin I'm gonna change the world, but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will".

Students develop their reading, writing and spoken language skills, studying selected works by Shakespeare and exploring a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts from the 19th. 20th and 21st Century.

During Key Stage 3 a wide range of reading takes place, including the use of the Accelerated Reader Programme.

At Key Stage 4 students prepare for the AQA English Language and Literature GCSE exams.     Additional revision lessons are taught throughout Key Stage 4.

Learning outside the classroom is important to us as an Academy.  Students are encouraged tp participate in a variety of extra-curricular clubs, activities and trips.  We offer opportunities to enter various competitions, including the Rotary Club Young Writers Competition.
